Deconstructing Hamburgers

You would think anybody would know how to eat a hamburger, even someone with autism. But no. Brace yourself for this: both Luke and Kate eat them vertically rather than horizontally. That is down from the top, and not counting the bun (or even eating it, in Kate’s case). Kate eats only the meat, and may fool with some cheese if it’s melted to the patty in a way not easily removed. Luke goes for whatever is directly under the bun top first, whether it’s the pickles, the lettuce, whatever. Then he’ll continue into whatever was under that first layer until he has left only the meat and the two bun halves. That part he’ll consume like the rest of the world’s hamburger eaters. Sometimes, if he has two patties (and his dad hasn’t already done so first), he’ll inherit Kate’s bun halves and make himself a second burger.

It’s something to watch. Sometimes it still amazes me that Cathy goes out to eat with any of us.
